Professor Roberto Bandinelli of the University of Florence discovered this variety while talking with Nunziatina Grassi, an eighty-five-year-old woman who took him around her vineyards and showed him the Occhiorosso for the first time. The variety is characterized by a sinuous-shaped trunk with medium-small, compact clusters, and small berries with thick, resilient skins.
